Elliot Mercer
Interdisciplinary
2024

Elliot Gordon Mercer is an interdisciplinary artist, performance scholar and expressive arts therapist. His creative work investigates the intersections of performance and visual art. While his projects are always rooted in the body, his multimodal art practice shifts between dance, drawing, film and photography. Foregrounding arts-therapeutic modalities, Mercer’s creative research utilizes performance as a process of imaginal thinking, integrating associative structures of perception, sensation, memory, experience and creativity to examine how we make and remake meaning in our lives. Mercer holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Theatre and Drama from Northwestern University and an MA in Performance Studies from New York University. He is a graduate of the Tamalpa Institute’s professional training program. Mercer is currently an American Council of Learned Societies Emerging Voices Fellow at the University of Chicago.
