This newly added three-day workshop explores tapestry as a study of atmosphere, surface, and spatial relationships. We’ll draw inspiration from qualities surrounding us at Cascade Head, such as horizon, contrast, opacity, and shifting light, translating these observations into woven compositions that prioritize material exploration over direct representation.

Participants will learn foundational tapestry techniques while working with a carefully curated palette of yarns. In addition to a full range of fine wool tapestry yarns, I’ll bring a collection of botanically dyed Icelandic wool prepared specifically for this workshop in a range of nuanced earth tones. Together, these fibers offer opportunities to explore how differences in scale, texture, density, and color can activate a woven surface.

Working on a small scale with Mirrix tapestry looms, we’ll experiment with stripes, gradations, transitions, and dimensional surfaces, comparing subtle and exaggerated shifts in material. Throughout the workshop, we’ll investigate the dialogue between smooth and textured yarns, exploring the expressive possibilities that emerge when finely woven passages meet more tactile, irregular surfaces.

All materials are provided, including access to a Mirrix tapestry loom. Beginners and experienced weavers alike are welcome.
