Description

By painting what you see, you’ll learn the foundations of building a strong painting. Through painting still life, we will focus on color, value, form and design. You will learn color mixing, the value of value and most importantly, the joy of painting. Joy is the real “secret sauce” that gives a painting the essence of YOU! The goal is for you to leave with improved oil painting skills, a better sense of color and an enhanced appreciation for how light and shadow create form.

Materials List

You will need to bring:

Participants should bring 3–4 substrates, either gessoed wood panels or gessoed canvas, no larger than 12 inches in either direction. The instructor works on Ampersand Gessoboard. These and all supplies can be purchased at Blick Art Supply, Artist & Craftsman, or ordered online through https://www.jerrysartarama.com/.

Participants will need Gamsol, an odorless thinner made by Gamblin, in a medium size. They will also need Gamblin solvent-free medium gel, which comes in a tube.

A selection of 4–5 brushes is recommended, including flats, rounds, or filberts in a combination of shapes and sizes ranging from #3 to #10. The instructor most frequently uses #4, #6, and #8 flats or filberts for small still lifes, which will be the focus of the class.

Additional materials include a pencil, a small jar for medium (a short, wide-mouth jar with a lid), and a larger jar for Gamsol for cleaning brushes. The instructor uses a dill-pickle-size jar with a lid for this purpose. A medium-size palette knife is needed for mixing small amounts of paint.

Paints should be Gamblin brand. The instructor recommends having Titanium Zinc White, Cadmium Lemon, India Yellow, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, and Ultramarine Blue. Cadmium Orange and Cobalt Teal are optional.

Participants will also need a palette, which may be a disposable pad, glass, acrylic, or sealed wood, along with nitrile gloves, rags or paper towels, and a shallow cardboard box—such as a plant or pizza box—for transporting wet paintings home.
