Description
In this unique workshop, learn to create mood and atmosphere that will make your paintings stand out and evoke a certain ‘magic.’ Using the mediums of soft and oil pastel as a focus, and working in small format, we will develop new ways of seeing through the use of additional materials and tools, along with acute observational skills resulting in evocative and intriguing works of art.
About the Instructor
Sondra Holtzman is an artist and record keeper of an evolving life. A professional artist for over 30 years, she conducts painting workshops internationally and within the United States. For her, the true joy of being an artist lies not only in the creative process but in the sharing of her passion with others, helping them to discover their own artistic voice.

Materials List
You will need to bring:
IMAGES you love that will be the subjects for the final two paintings: iPads, photos, etc. NOTE: These images should evoke some kind of atmospheric mood
SOFT PASTELS: A good selection of soft and hard pastels; artist quality are best and are what Sondra recommends.
OIL PASTELS: Sondra recommends a set of Mungyo soft oil pastels (either a 24 or 36 set) and a small set of Sennelier pastels. These can be ordered from Dick Blick
Black and white pastel in both oil and soft pastel
A small selection of pastel pencils
ESSENTIAL FOR OIL PASTEL: Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid in Gloss or Satin, 8 oz. available from Dick Blick
SURFACES: Two or three Pastelboards by Ampersand: Sondra recommends 9”x12” or 8”x10”
A selection of heavier paper: BFK Rives, Sanded pastel paper, Sturdy watercolor paper: at least 6 sheets of a variety of heavier papers
Any other support you like, but please make sure it is sanded/textured
Support board for taping painting surfaces to; a piece of foam core is ideal and lightweight
Blue painters tape
Vine and compressed charcoal
Small container of Pastel Ground by Golden
A small container of White Gesso
Empty dishes or containers for mixing the Pastel Ground and Gesso
Kneaded eraser (two would be ideal)
Soft paper towels
Package of baby wipes
Brushes: a selection of different brushes for a range of marks
2 or 3 sponge brushes: Sondra recommends 1” or 2” size
Notebook/pen
Old credit card; things for creating texture
A few old rags
Protective clothing you don’t mind getting ‘painterly’
Mechanical or regular pencil
An old toothbrush
Optional: Spray Fixative
Optional: A silicone color shaper for pastel from Dick Blick
Provided by instructors:
1 piece of mat board prepared with tissue paper and coated with Pastel Ground labeled Texture
1 piece of mat board coated with house paint/acrylic mixture and labeled Charcoal
5 pieces of mat board coated with Pastel Ground for oil pastel/soft pastel surface for daily paintings
1 piece of canvas board with pink acrylic paint for Underpainting
1 awl to be returned to me
1 piece of natural charcoal from the forest floor
Sponge brush and plastic lid or dish for mixing
A small selection of pastel and Biggie papers
