Description

Participants will learn how to block out, shape and carve a canoe bowl with Port Gamble S’Klallam carver Brian Perry. The Coast Salish represent over 40 nations that live throughout the Olympic Peninsula and beyond. They have a rich tradition of woodwork which includes canoes, totem poles, masks and bowls such as the one you will explore with Brian in this 4 day workshop. You will learn to lay out the design, prepare the block of alder and shaping the vessel. We will go over stool maintenance and sharpening techniques that Brian has found works best in his practice and learn more about the cultural and historical contexts of Salish vessels.
