Description
Jump into the deep end of color and the rich luminosity of oil paint mixed with cold wax. We will apply paint with squeegees and putty knives (it’s like painting with whipped butter). Let’s pump up the color and make bold, startling marks to create surprise and take our breath away. We will enhance our paintings by making more lines and marks than usual, taking our lines for a leisurely walk through the paint. We’ll work intuitively and energetically on multiple pieces, exploring texture, layers, composition, and design with an emphasis on color. Layers dry quickly and cleanup is done with baby oil. You will complete several pieces and go home with painting starts.

Materials List
You will need to bring:
NOTE: Please read carefully if you have taken this class with Dayna previously, as the supply list has changed.
Materials Participants Should Bring
Participants should bring six to eight wood substrates no larger than 12 × 12 inches. Multiple boards will be worked on at once to allow for drying time. Dayna prefers cradled wood substrates because the sides can either be taped off to keep them clean or painted for added variety. Dayna almost always paints the edges, treating them like four mini canvases. If participants prefer not to use cradled boards, flat wood panels or Arches Oil Paper are also acceptable.
Participants should bring a 16 oz. container of Gamblin Cold Wax Medium, along with an assortment of oil paints in colors they love, including Titanium White. With a red, blue, and yellow, many colors can be mixed, but participants are encouraged to bring plenty of their favorite colors. Previously, Dayna provided oil paint to share; however, oil paints will not be provided this year.
Additional required tools include a Princeton Catalyst “Mini” Scraper, a Colour Shaper silicone tool in either a 1-inch or 1.5-inch size, and a silicone squeegee from Squeegee Press in a small and/or medium size (coldwaxacademy.com/shop/). Dayna strongly recommends having at least one of these silicone squeegees.
Participants should also bring 8.5 oz. of Galkyd Medium (not Galkyd Lite), Marabu Art Crayons in a few favorite colors, and Stabilo Woodies 3-in-1 chunky pencils in a few favorite colors. A small container of mineral oil or baby oil is required, along with two or three palette knives in a variety of sizes.
Paper supplies should include a 12 × 16 pad of Arches Oil Paper and a pad of palette paper; Dayna prefers a 16 × 20 inch size. Participants should also bring a roll of paper towels, masking tape or painter’s tape, and a box of wax paper.
Optional materials participants may bring include a variety of texture-making materials such as stencils, corrugated cardboard, or old rubber stamps. Participants are encouraged to be creative and bring what they have on hand. Optional mark-making tools may include skewers, awls, clay tools, nails, or metal dental picks. Participants may also wish to bring boxes for transporting paintings home.
Provided by instructors:
Dayna will provide acrylic paint for priming boards, Gamsol solvent, Galkyd Lite, and Citra-Solv. She will also supply R & F pigment sticks for experimentation, along with stencils, brayers, and scrapers to share. Additional shared materials include texture-making materials, mark-making tools, charcoal and graphite pencils, gloves, red vinyl viewers, marble dust, newsprint, tissue paper, and steel wool.
