Description

Over the course of three days, partipants will learn and practice the basics of the fascinating process of paper and fabric marbling. We will begin by exploring the materials and techniques needed to marble on paper, studying famous historical patterns, and practicing on 12-15 sheets of primed paper. As the class progresses, we will focus on marbling fabric, introducing more complex patterns and discussing the application of Color Theory in marbling, creating up to 12 sheets of two types of cotton fabric. On the final day, we will refine their skills, selecting a color scheme and pattern to apply to silk scarves. Each participant will create two silk scarves, putting their learned techniques into practice.

Pietro Accardi is native to the northwestern Italian city of Turin where his father Gaetano Accardi once operated “Tipografia Accardi,” what was then a state of the art printing press. From a young age he assisted his father in the the bustling press. He later immersed himself in the more ancient traditions of paper marbling, restoration and bookbinding.

Pietro went on to establish “La Legatoria del Sole,” his own bookbindery in Turin for 12 years. He worked for Turin’s Municipal Archives, main public library, and University libraries restoring and binding books. He also ran his own paper marbling and decorative box making business within the bindery. In 2006, he met Vanessa, then a University exchange student. They were soon married and she later “imported” him to America. He was well received as an instructor at the San Francisco Center for the Book, Nevada Museum of Art, and other venues across the West Coast. They currently reside in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains with their beloved felines.
