People often ask the difference between a Sitka Center Donation versus a Membership.
A membership gives you benefits (like discounts on workshops) in return for your contribution, but your tax deduction is reduced by the value of the benefits you receive (so if you buy a $100 membership and you get $15 dollar discount on a workshop, you can only submit $85 as a charitable contribution at tax time.) The same amount as a donation doesn't give you any workshop discounts, but you can claim the full $100 as a charitable contribution on your taxes.
How do I register early for workshops?
Early workshop enrollment begins the latter part of February. If you are not currently a member and want to register early, sign up for membership at the same time you register for a workshop. You can either visit our website, call us (541-994-5485), or send a letter with payment to: Sitka Center, 56605 Sitka Dr, Otis, OR 97368.
How do I receive a discount on a workshop tuition?
Here's the breakdown on membership levels offering discounts on workshop tuition fees:
• $100 Supporter level – 10% for the individual holding the membership
• $150 Household level – 10% for family members living in the same household
• $250 Sustainer level – 20% discount for family members living in the same household
• $500 Benefactor level – 30% discount for family members living in the same household
Can I use my membership to register my non-member friends during the members-only registration period?
The short answer is no. Often during the members' early registration period, workshops fill prior to being offered to the general public. It wouldn't be fair to other members if we opened this loophole for non-members.
Can a family member use my individual membership to register for a workshop?
A $50 Individual Membership is valid only for the person whose name is listed with that membership. But a Household Membership is designed to let you register family members.
Can I purchase a membership for someone other than myself?
Yes! Memberships make great gifts any time of the year for whatever occasion. Probably the easiest way to make this happen is to call us at 541-994-5485 so we can make sure the membership goes to the right person.
Is my membership contribution tax deductible?
Contributions to the Sitka Center are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Please contact a tax professional for details. In general the deductibility of your membership is reduced by the value of whatever benefit you receive. So if you save $15 by getting a discount, then the charitable deduction you can submit is reduced by $15.
Do you send me a renewal reminder?
We'll send you a renewal notice prior to the actual expiration date of your membership.
