Certainly! Here’s the revised bio, using Shirod’s own words as closely as possible:
Shirod Younker is a Citizen of the Coquille Indian Tribe and a descendant of the Miluk and Umpqua tribes. He grew up on the South Slough in Coos Bay, Oregon, and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oregon State University. With over 30 years of experience as an artist and educator, and nearly 15 years as a business owner, Shirod’s work is deeply connected to his heritage.
Shirod is a partner and owner of Kanim Associates, LLC, and is the Co-Director of Changing Currents: Youth Tribal Water Summit, a residency and virtual program designed for Native American student leaders. The program fosters collective dialogue on water protection and its importance to tribal communities. It serves as a leadership development and education program for students ages 15-19 who are in high school or early college.
For the past 18 years, Shirod has managed Journeys in Creativity: Explorations in Native American Art, a program that was previously held at the Oregon College of Art and Craft and is now hosted at the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. The program promotes Indigenous arts in Native communities and serves as a college pathway program for Native youth.
As an artist, Shirod is a sculptor, carver, and arts instructor. He works to facilitate the perpetuation of Indigenous aesthetic sensibilities in a contemporary context, aiming to recognize, foster, and study the values from which these arts are inspired. Much of Shirod’s work is done in the spirit of collaboration. His pieces can be seen at various locations, including the Nasomah Memorial in Bandon, Oregon; The Mill Hotel and Casino; the City of Portland Building; the Oregon Historical Society Museum; Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts; Longhouse Education and Cultural Center; and in a cultural arts collection in New Zealand. Shirod is also an artist with the Inspired Natives Program at Eighth Generation Wool Blankets.
Shirod resides in Portland and Warm Springs, Oregon, with his wife and two dogs.
