Description

Let’s stretch our notion of what a landscape is and take it to new levels: looser, freer, and a bit more unconventional. Working in a series using multiple layers of oil and cold wax, we will create nine 8×8-inch abstracted landscapes—each an individual painting, but when put together, creating a 24×24-inch exploratory grid of our work. Using color, marks, swaths, circles, and lines, we will use our 5 days together to reimagine the landscape.

Materials List

You will need to bring:

Nine 8×8-inch substrates. These can be deep cradled panels, narrow cradled panels, or even flat panels. If preferred, participants can work entirely on Arches Oil Paper. Dayna requests that participants bring nine of the same substrate they decide upon for their grid to be displayed together.

Note: If participants prefer not to create a grid, they should bring multiple substrates of their choice and create individual reimagined landscapes. If choosing this option, a variety of sizes and/or types of substrates can be brought.

Note: Dayna prefers to use cradled wood substrates. These work well because the sides can either be taped to keep clean, or paint can be extended onto the edges for added variety. Wood substrates are particularly great because some of the techniques used in the workshop are aggressive (e.g., removing paint by sanding or with solvent). Arches Oil Paper can be used exclusively if participants prefer not to use wood substrates.

16 oz. Gamblin cold wax

Small size Squeegee press silicone scraper(s) – these can be ordered online from Squeegee Press

Colour Shaper Silicone Tool (1-inch or 1.5-inch)

Princeton Catalyst Mini-Blade 01 scraper

2 or 3 palette knives in a variety of sizes

One 3 or 4-inch putty knife with flexible blade

12×16 inch pad of Arches Oil Paper

A small assortment of oil paints in colors participants love, including Titanium White. With red, blue, and yellow, many colors can be mixed. (Dayna will bring lots of paint colors to share.)

Pad of palette paper (Dayna likes the 16×20 inch size) or participants can bring the palette of their choice (e.g., glass trays)

1 roll of paper towels

Roll of painter’s or masking tape (Dayna uses white painter’s tape)

Box of wax paper

Optional for participants to bring:
A variety of texture-making materials: stencils, corrugated cardboard, old rubber stamps. Be creative and bring what’s on hand. Dayna will bring a lot of texture materials to share.

Mark-making tools: skewers, clay tools, nails, metal dental picks. Again, be creative with what’s on hand.

Participants may want to bring empty pizza boxes for transporting paintings home if using wood substrates.
