Description

Over the course of three days, participants will create their own ceramic spiritual animal in the tradition of Mexican Alebrijes, with guidance from artist Veronica Arquilevich Guzman. The workshop will begin with using pinch pot techniques to mold your animal, which can be a single creature the participant feels called to, or even a creative combination of multiple animals. This process includes shaping heads, wings, tails, and other individual parts that will be left to dry overnight. The next day, participants will assemble the various parts, attaching tails, wings, feet, and ears to the main body. By the last day you will be adding texture through carving or wet clay and apply colorful underglaze to enhance the design. The piece will then be left to dry slowly before firing at the Sitka Center.
