Description

As a child, Britt was gifted an old box of pastels that opened a door to a world of connected color. With pastel, you are part of the medium as the application tool, no intercessory is needed. In the plant to pigment to pastel journey, source connection is paramount in understanding processing techniques and outcomes. This immersive one day workshop on the art of botanical handcrafted pastel. Learn the history of pastel, binder and fixative recipes, and create your own set of soft pastels with local botanical pigments.

In this workshop, you will learn:

A short history of pastel as medium.
The difference between pigment extracts vs lake pigments.
Handcrafted pastel, binder, and natural fixative recipes.
Hand-rolling, shaping, and curing techniques.
Recycling and troubleshooting with homemade pastel.

We’ll reserve time for sketching and free play with Britt’s collection of handcrafted pastels from local botanical and mineral pigments.

You will create a set of 6 handcrafted pastels (including local indigo, madder, wisteria vine, and more) with carrying case, handout of pastel recipes & techniques, sampler art, and a custom natural fixative spray.
