Description
In her book Rooted: Life at the Crossroads of Science, Nature, and Spirit, writer Lyanda Lynn Haupt defines the word enchantment as “to be changed by the song we have heard.” Allow yourself to be changed by the song of the natural world in this unique (song)writing workshop, led by singer-songwriter and former environmental educator Avery Hill.
Our first day will begin with an immersive experience on the Sitka grounds, learning about selected species and ecological concepts, demystifying a bit of all that “green stuff” we walk by every day. Then, using that immersive experience, we will put our pens to paper and explore lyrical exercises that put words to our observations, reflections, feelings, questions, and more.
Our second day will begin with another immersive experience, engaging us with the sounds of nature. When we return to the classroom, we will focus on compositional exercises that translate what we have heard into music.
This workshop is open to writers with any level of songwriting experience, including absolute beginners, and with any instrument, including a solo voice. Those curious to engage their creative process more with the natural world in any genre of writing are welcome, as well.
