About the Instructor

Professional artist Sondra Holtzman’s artwork reflects musings of travel, afar and close to home.

She leads painting explorations all over the world, including Europe, South America and the South Pacific.

After attending Rhode Island School of Design, Sondra worked as a freelance designer, creating artwork for clients like Nike and Delta Air Lines. Her work has been published in 1000 Artist Journal Pages and Signatures: The Art Journal Collection by Somerset Studio.

For Sondra, the true joy of being an artist also lies in the sharing of her passion with others, helping them to discover their own artistic voice.

You will need to bring:

IMAGES you love that will be the subjects for oil pastel studies and final paintings; look for simple shapes

OIL PASTELS: One set of MUNGYO GALLERY SOFT OIL PASTELS, Set of 48/Assorted Colors ($22.80) which can be ordered on Amazon (www.amazon.com)
HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: A small set of Caran d’Ache Oil Pastels and a small set of Sennelier Oil Pastels. These are expensive but well worth the cost. If you are choosing between these two sets, please order a set of Sennelier oil pastels. You’ll be very glad you did.
Optional: A small set of iridescent or metallic oil pastels
Extra black and white oil pastels
A set of pastel pencils

ESSENTIAL FOR OIL PASTEL: Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid in gloss or satin finish
You will need this to create layers in your painting.

SURFACES:
Two Pastelboards by Ampersand: I recommend 9”x12” or 8”x10”
A pad of SANDED pastel paper, such as UART. Visit www.dakotapastels.com for a variety of sanded paper options.
A sheet of heavier paper like BFK Rives, and/or a sheet of 300 lb. watercolor paper
Support board for taping artwork to; a piece of foam core is ideal and lightweight
Blue painters tape
Vine and compressed charcoal
Small container of PASTEL GROUND by Golden. You will use this to prepare your own unique surface.
OTHER:
A razor blade or a palette knife for scraping away oil pastel
Mechanical or regular pencil
A roll of wax paper for protecting the paintings OR a photo album that can be purchased at Goodwill.
A good size is 8” x 10”, 9” x 12” or 8” x8” (optional)
Optional: A ball point pen that is empty with all the ink used up if possible
Empty dishes or containers for mixing the pastel ground
Kneaded eraser and white silicone eraser
Package of baby wipes for cleaning your pastels and your hands
2 or 3 sponge brushes: I recommend 1” or 2” size
Notebook/pen
Old credit card; things for creating texture
A few old rags
Protective clothing you don’t mind getting ‘painterly’
An old oil pastel or watercolor painting you don’t mind ‘transforming’
