Description

In this workshop, we will create work embracing the spontaneous essence of the monotype medium as our guide. Monotypes allow for a type of instant gratification that is not available in other mediums and can provide an opportunity to create beautiful work with unexpected outcomes. Nanette finds monotypes to be a powerful tool in seeing values and breaking down barriers that also enhance her painting practice. The workshop will support various interpretations of your desired subject matter, including representational, abstract, imagined, or direct observation from our surroundings.
Utilizing brayers, cotton cloths, brushes, and various tools, we’ll apply and remove ink on plexiglass plates, later running them through a printing press to create unique original artworks. The workshop combines instruction, demonstration, and individual work time, covering a spectrum of monotype techniques. Emphasis will be on light, value, impulse, experimentation, and, most importantly, having fun throughout the creative process.

About the Instructor

Nanette Wallace’s gestural artwork is created as an emotional response to the world around her.

Nanette Wallace’s gestural artwork is created as an emotional response to the world around her, with an especially deep connection to water, nature, and the play of light. She approaches her work with an emphasis on experimentation and intuition, allowing the spontaneous nature of the medium, most notably the monotype, to guide her.

Her monotypes are created using crude tools including q-tips, her fingertips wrapped in cloth, and brayers to add and remove ink from a plexiglass plate. Her completed images are transferred onto paper by pressing the plate and paper together using a printing press. The monotype printing process yields only one unique singular print and is often referred to as “the painterly print.” Monotypes are essentially an original painting, in ink, on paper.

Nanette creates her monotypes and paintings from her home studio located in Portland, Oregon. She received a BFA with a focus on printmaking and figure drawing from OSU, where she was awarded the Norma Siebert Printmaking Scholarship. Her career path also includes working as a graphic artist, illustrator, and letterpress printer. She is an award winning artist, featured widely in solo, invitational, and juried exhibitions, as well as private and public collections. Nanette has also been featured in print publications, nationally and internationally, including in books sold at the Tate Museum in the UK, and the Louvre in Paris.
