Description

In this workshop, participants will learn how to make cordage with tule, prepare sedge and rush materials for weaving, and weave a cordage twined basket. The materials were harvested by Stephanie and her family a year in advance using traditional ecological knowledge. This class will learn how to make a round twined sedge and rush basket, using S and Z twist techniques. Stephanie will also bring family belongings, plant samples, and more to share.

anqati təmtəm tənas siyaxus, Stephanie Craig, is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Her Mother’s people are Santiam and Yoncalla Kalapuya, Takelma Rogue River, Cow Creek Umpqua, Wakanasisi, upper Chinook. She’s been trained by the Smithsonian Institution, the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History and Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, as well as by traditional basket weavers, museum specialists, archaeologists and her Elders. She is committed to continuing the protection and teachings of our natural resources, TEK, cultural education, preserving her cultural heritage and lifeways for future generations and to continue on the traditions of her Elders.
