Workshop Overview

Participants will learn about the dynamic practice of creating woodburned art. While our focus will be on woodburning, participants will also learn about pyrography on canvas, leather and other natural materials. The group will review different tools, tips and pyrography equipment for woodburning, including image transfer techniques. Participants will also have the opportunity to use a woodburning pen to design and burn their very own charcuterie board. Participants will leave this workshop with knowledge of woodburning basics, a unique, hand-burned charcuterie board and ideas for the future.

About the Instructor(s)

Melissa Romeo has experience leading studio workshops at both the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Peggy Guggenheim in Venice, Italy. Melissa's workshops have been featured on Airbnb Experiences and she currently teaches in Portland, OR. While she loves working with paint and clay, her true passion is for pyrography. Applying heat and pressure to wood, Melissa brings new life to abandoned or forgotten pieces of unfinished wood.

Materials List: Students Bring

While the instructor will be supplying the charcuterie boards and wood burning tool, participants are also encouraged to bring preferred wood burning tools as well as any pre-sanded, unfinished wood that they might want to burn on. In the past, participants arrived with turned bowls, a skateboard, and wooded boxes that they made prior to the workshop!

While designs will be available, participants are also encouraged to bring in a printed image of any specific designs they might wish to burn on their boards. Designs need to be printed and to size (within 18" x 8").
