Workshop Overview

Capture the splendor of the Cascade Head region with this 2-day workshop. The first day will be spent working on site, directly from nature. The second day will transition back to the studio, where we will work from our plein air paintings to create larger, more realized works. Open to all acrylic and oil painters. No prior experience with plein air is necessary.

About the Instructor(s)

Scott Gellatly’s approach to teaching is based around his concept of informed intuition. Studying color theory, color strategies and composition approaches in a clear, concise manner allows artists to store these skills in their subconscious to allow for the flow of creativity to happen. Scott spent fifteen years as product manager at Gamblin Artists Colors, where he developed a deep understanding of color and the skills to share information clearly. He has been teaching and painting full time since May of 2020.

Materials List: Students Bring

This workshop will be focusing on plein air painting in oil or acrylic.

Color Palette:

- Titanium White

- Cadmium Yellow Light

- Indian Yellow (Gamblin oils), Indian Yellow Hue (Golden acrylics)

- Cadmium Orange

- Quinacridone Red (Gamblin oils), Primary Magenta (Golden acrylics)

- Ultramarine Blue

- Cobalt Teal or Turquoise (Gamblin oils or Golden Acrylic)

Painting Panels:

Ampersand Gessobord panels are my favorite, and they work well for both oils and acrylics.

Their flat, 1/8" panels are sturdy and easy to travel with. You can easily make your own by cutting hardwood/plywood panels and apply 2 – 3 coats of quality acrylic gesso to the surface.

4 - 6 @ panels, sizes 6" x 8" or 8" x 10" for plein air.

2 – 3 @ larger panels for studio. Appropriate sizes are 12 x 12, 11 x 14, 12 x 16.

Palette:

Glass or disposable palettes are all good options. The bigger, the better. For a glass palette, a piece of glass taped to a foam core backing is a good, economical option.

Wet-panel Carrier:

These are more important for oil painters, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. I recommend RAYMAR wet panel carriers, as they are lightweight. Refer to their chart on their website listing the various sized panels their carriers will accommodate. Alternatively, clean, empty pizza boxes work well.

Easel:

The main consideration with a plein air easel is that it is lightweight, but large enough to support

the size of paintings we’ll be doing in class. I recommend the UGO Pochade Boxes. They come in three different sizes – the smallest and middle sizes will work well for the size of panels listed above.

Unless your outdoor easel is equipped with legs, you will need a tripod. I’ve used the MeFOTO

Backpacker for years, as its sturdy and lightweight. Sikta and I have a couple extra plein air easels, available by request on a first come, first served basis.

Please let me know.

Oil/Acrylic Painting Brushes:

Flat sizes 6 & 10. Recommended brand: Princeton Aspen (or similar)

Palette knife: metal, tear-drop shape for color mixing and paint application.

Other Materials:

- Painting medium for oil painting: Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel

- Spray bottle or retarder medium if working in acrylics

- Metal Palette knife, "teardrop shape" such as RGM S.026. No plastic palette

knives.

- Backpack to carry plein air gear

- Camping stool if you prefer to sit.

- Rags/paper towels

- Bug spray, sun hat
