About the workshop: In May, students will explore the evolution of comic books and graphic novels from Superman to Spiderman, the Comics Code Authority and beyond. Students will try their hands at illustration inspired by the professional works of Nestucca Valley School District alumnus Jonathan Case. Case began his comic book and graphic novel endeavors with just a mere pencil and paper in his youth and has since honed his craft to an award-winning level. Students will view excerpts from Case’s latest graphic novel, Little Monarchs, as inspiration for their own comic designs, characters, plots and settings.
About the artist: Jonathan Case creates graphic novels, comics, murals, commercial artwork and other art. Publications include his newly released graphic novel, Little Monarchs (author/artist, Holiday House) and New Deal (author/artist, Dark Horse), which was a nominee for the Reuben, Harvey, and Oregon Book awards for best graphic album. Case earned the Eisner Award for Green River Killer, A True Detective Story (Dark Horse). Other works includes Dear Creature (author/artist, Dark Horse), Batman ’66 (artist, DC), Superman: American Alien (artist, DC) and Over the Garden Wall: Distillatoria and Over the Garden Wall: Circus Friends (author, BOOM!).
